ABOUT ME

Don’t you always feel at least a tiny bit odd writing about yourself? Do I pretend that I’m not the person writing about it and talk about “her” doing this and “she” being this and that? I’ll admit it. This is my blog and I’m the one writing. There.

I’m Barb, I’m a Christian, I’m a mom and I’m older than I think I should be. I’m also really glad you stopped by!

I’ve been so very fortunate to have been able to make my living as an artist for about 25 years. I started doing little craft shows part time. I made all KINDS of things and sold them. I remember being AMAZED that ANYone would want to buy something I made! Eventually I designed and manufactured jewelry and then a clothing line. I did shows all up and down the Eastern coast and had some totally wonderful experiences and met the most incredible people while doing it. I was honored to be voted best in show and first place several times too! I was very fortunate to be pretty successful and during my brief foray into wholesale sales I remember the feeling of getting the one wholesale order from the Opryland Hotel that equaled my entire previous wholesale show!! I also remember that it took about 5 DAYS to just pack the thing, much less manufacture the goods (I did artwork on each and every piece and had them sewn by wonderful seamstresses from their homes). I think I slept about 2 hours during the month it took to make that order and I’m pretty sure my employees about quit on me.

My sweet girl Lexi came along about 10 years into the jewelry and clothing thing and I took her everywhere with me – I’d waited a LONG time for her and wasn’t about to leave her at home! She had her little spot next to my chair in her pack n play and I usually hired someone to come to help me take care of her. Well guess what? When she learned to walk she also learned that she wasn’t so crazy about coming with me any more. Again - I wasn’t going to leave her at home - so I quit! I walked right out on that business and I started doing faux finishes and murals so I could stay home more. Eventually I started travelling with that too and I got to do all kinds of cool things in peoples homes and clubhouses in different cities around the Southeast – I participated in LOTS of show homes here in metro Atlanta and Charlotte, won some awards and got featured in some pretty cool national publications and local newspapers. A couple of years ago my bones and the economy let me know it was time to give up the ladder and I was FINALLY able to concentrate on photography again!

My course work in college was for an Art Ed degree. I really never intended to teach but I got more studio classes with that degree than with the Fine Art degree – go figure! I wanted to take every single studio class that I could because I wanted to learn it all! I studied photography and learned that I could be just as creative with a camera and a darkroom as I could be with a paintbrush and I fell in LOVE with it. There’s been a camera in my hand ever since (though my darkroom has gone digital!).

I hope you’ll visit often – maybe even leave me a little note sometime when you do. I REALLY hope you’ll give me a call sometime to schedule a session. I’d love to meet you!

Barb
